Recommended by Catherine Mulvihill of My Happy Insides

Catherine mentioned, not this book in particular, but the concept of the Enneagram and how she’s used it to understand herself, her partner, and others she works with.

There are a number of other books on Amazon on the Enneagram topic which you will probably see when you follow the Amazon link.  There is also a Enneagram Institute created in 1997 by the authors Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson.  There are also Enneagram tests online that you can take for free to determine your type.

Models like this help to understand one’s self as well as others.  Where there is understanding, there is better communication, better relationships, better lives.  This is one of many models; the ones we have experienced have all proven helpful.

From Amazon’s description:

The first definitive guide to using the wisdom of the enneagram for spiritual and psychological growth

The ancient symbol of the Enneagram has become one of today’s most popular systems for self-understanding, based on nine distinct personality types. Now, two of the world’s foremost Enneagram authorities introduce a powerful new way to use the Enneagram as a tool for personal transformation and development. Whatever your spiritual background, the Enneagram shows how you can overcome your inner barriers, realize your unique gifts and strengths, and discover your deepest direction in life.

The Wisdom of the Enneagram includes:

Two highly accurate questionnaires for determining your type
Vivid individual profiles focused on maximizing each type’s potential and minimizing predictable pitfalls
Spiritual Jump Starts, Wake-Up Calls, and Red Flags for each type
Dozens of individualized exercises and practical strategies for letting go of troublesome habits, improving relationships, and increasing inner freedom
Revealing insights into the deepest motivations, fears, and desires of each type

Highly accessible, yet filled with sophisticated concepts and techniques found nowhere else, The Wisdom of the Enneagram is a strikingly new fusion of psychology and spirituality. It offers an exciting vision of human possibility and a clear map of the nine paths to our highest self-expression.

“Hal Elrod is a genius and his book The Miracle Morning has been magical in my life. What Hal has done is taken the best practices, developed over centuries of human consciousness development, and condensed the ‘best of the best’ into a daily morning ritual. A ritual that is now part of my day.”

The Road Less Travelled And Beyond

I was so moved by “The Road Less Travelled” that when this book came out I had to read it.

This book contains, among other things, Dr. Peck’s model of spiritual growth which I reference in my book Rules Of The Spirit.  That one thing makes this book a worthy read.

The model is Dr. Peck’s condensed version of theologian James Fowler’s “Stages of Faith” – a 7-stage model, and rather a difficult read; it’ll make your head hurt.

Since I reference Dr. Peck’s model frequently, the question often comes up – is one stage better than another.  I liken the question to asking whether it’s better to be a 10 year old, or a 15 year old, or an adult. Is one better than the other?  I would say no, they are just natural stages of growth.  It is good to move along the growth curve, and I wouldn’t really want to go back, but it doesn’t seem appropriate to say that one is better than the other.  Interestingly, “adult” applies, at least legally, to anyone 18 years of age or older, but I bet you’d agree that there is a vast difference between an 18-year-old and a 60-year-old.  The mental, emotional, and spiritual growth doesn’t necessarily stop at 18.

The real benefit of the model is that with an understanding of the model, and being able to identify where another person fits into the model, it becomes possible to modify my own behavior to fit the other person.  Since a Stage 2 Institutional finds peace in their “black and whiteness” it doesn’t help for me to speak in terms of technicolor – it just pushes them into fear, and the fear shuts down communication.  One thing Ann and I have found is that people are where they need to be, spiritually.  It doesn’t help to try to get someone to understand concepts they’re not ready for – when they’re ready they’ll seek it out.  You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.  When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.  The inverse is true: when the teacher is ready, the student will appear.

This book is on Paul’s reading list.

From Amazons description:

With the words, “Do not try to change people; they are only messengers telling you who you are. Revalue yourself and they will confirm the change,” Goddard invites us to resist the temptation toward judgment and to look at ourselves for the change we want to see in the world an in others. “God’s promise is unconditional; God’s law is conditional, and comes in its own good time. If you do not experience it in this life,” he said, “You pass through a door, that’s all that death is, and you are restored to life instantly in a world like this, and you go on there with the same problems you had here with no loss of identity.”

This is my first book, with foreword by a mentor Raymond Aaron, NY Times Top Ten best selling author.

Also see my second book “The Energy Of Forgiveness” with foreword by Eva Mozes Kor, Auschwitz survivor and founder of the Candles holocaust museum.

I frequently had people ask me “when are you going to write a book about this?” and so I did!

You’ve heard the expressions “We are in the world, but not of the world” or “We are spirits having a human experience, not humans having a spiritual experience.”  That is where this book originated.

This book covers my “Rules of the Spirit” paradigm for understanding what is “Of the world” and what is “Of the Spirit.”  Out of that comes the “Reality Inversion” that the Rules of the World create where things appear to be opposite to what they really are.  For instance the World says forgiveness is needed by the forgiven, when Spirit says forgiveness is wholly for the benefit of the forgiver.  It also covers such things as the “good” and “bad” scale – there is no “good” and “bad”, there is only up or down the infinite line of “goodness” with “good” and “bad” being relative to what we perceive to be the “zero” point.  But “zero” on an infinite line is arbitrary.

This book was my introduction to Ernest Holmes, back in the early 2000’s.  Frankly it’s been so long that I need to re-read the book because I don’t remember much of the content.  The cover on my copy has a colorized version of an engraving from 19th century Nicholas Flammarion’s “L’Atmostphere: Météorologie Populaire”  (Is this where J. K. Rowling got her name for the character Nicolas Flammel?) something similar to the one here.  This image is such a vivid description of my life the last 20 years or so, and increasingly so as time goes on.  Peering through the veil… wheels within wheels.  What an experience!  Alas, as you can see the current printing does not have this powerful image.

Here’s some of my bookmarked underlinings from the book:
My favorite is – and I have committed it to memory:

“You will rise and you will fall, you will get discouraged, you will become encouraged, but always you will be progressing, always, and so you must simply stick to it and the day will come when you will no longer say, “I hope, I desire, I pray,” but you will say, “I know.”

Others are:

“You have got to practice these things.  Take a few moments each day in silence and recognition of Infinite life; Affirm one, It is in me now; two I can use it, my word goes forth into mind; three It takes my word and creates it; four, I see in my life the thing which it has created.

Taking that as a proposition, yo can handle as many things as you want to — as many as you can carry in mind.

Literally speaking, you and I are in an infinite mind which creates for us.  Now, then, you can take thought and speak it forth with absolution confiction.

The length of time you must treat: you might have to treat an hour before you believe what you state.  Think about it until you absolutely think that is the truth.

Do it two or three times a day, until there is a perfect calm confidence, knowing that it is done.”

“God can only do for you what you let God do through you.”

In other words, you have to ALLOW. Not force, allow.  Let go, let God.

“Never have a sense that you are working against anything.  There is and can be no opposition, except in your own thought.”

and

“You will find nine times out of ten that the ailments will be in some way related to the emotions.”

We have several other books that list diseases and their underlying emotion.  I have noticed this myself.  I have seen someone who was shaking in their boots in fear, but covering it up so that no one (but me, the empath) noticed.  This person died of brain cancer.  I’ve noticed that breast cancer tends to be associated with a blockage of the ability to either nurture or be nurtured.  Think about the disease, and what it may symbolize and you’re likely to realize the emotional underpinning.

Bottom line: if you haven’t been exposed to New Thought, be prepared to have your mind blown.
